Louisville Pride Center and Dare to Care Partner to Launch First Secular Food Pantry for LGBTQIA+ Community

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Louisville Pride Center and Dare to Care Partner to Launch First Secular Food Pantry for LGBTQIA+ Community

Louisville, KY, July 11, 2024 — The Louisville Pride Center, in collaboration with Dare to Care, is excited to announce the launch of a new, choice-centered food pantry, set to begin operations in mid-August 2024. This initiative will be the first and only secular food pantry in the area. While it is open to anyone in need, this partnership will ensure a location that is specifically designed to provide the services available through Dare to Care in a safe space for LGBTQIA+ individuals seeking affirming and dignified access to these services.

The Louisville Pride Center’s food pantry will provide a welcoming and inclusive environment where individuals can comfortably access essential food resources. The choice-centered approach empowers clients to select items that meet their specific dietary needs and preferences, ensuring a more personalized and supportive experience.

“Many people in our community have food insecurity,” said Sydni Hampton, Program Manager at the Louisville Pride Center, who is heading the program. “Unfortunately, stigma for being ‘in need’ or discomfort with getting food from religious institutions causes many to shirk the resource. I’ve been there, I get it. I’m an artist, and a drag queen at that, sometimes I experience food insecurity. There’s no shame in it. That’s something I hope to see change with the introduction of this as a resource.”

Hampton continued, “It’s important that there’s a conversation around the stigma and dismantling it and understanding that you don’t have to be on the streets or starving to be food insecure. Food insecurity is irregular, incomplete or a total lack of access to food. It’s a term that’s inclusive of maybe eating once a day or having to scavenge for food, or eating regularly but not being able to access food that is healthy, or otherwise not being secure that you will have food when you need it.”

The partnership with Dare to Care addresses a significant barrier many LGBTQIA+ individuals face when seeking assistance from food banks, which are often housed in religious institutions. “This partnership was a breath of fresh air,” Hampton added. “With so many LGBTQIA+ folks who don’t feel safe or comfortable in a church, it is natural that we provide that at the Louisville Pride Center. Now, you don’t have to worry about how you’re perceived or if you’ll be welcome.”

The Louisville Pride Center offers several vital services to the community, including harm reduction supplies, vaccine clinics, social support groups and more. By providing a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment, the Center continues its mission to support and uplift the LGBTQIA+ community in Louisville.

Louisville Pride Center – April Update

As we enter our second quarter of 2024, we wanted to express our excitement at the many ways the Louisville Pride Center is growing. With new full-time staff members, new spaces and new projects, there is a lot to see at the center. Let’s start with our new full-time staff members!

Vic Leon is one of the Program Managers, responsible for organizing events like our weekly game nights and our educational series, ‘Ask the Expert.’ Vic also recently began developing our newsletter and promotional materials. Vic is leading the Hats Off! Derby Hat Making Afternoon from 2-4PM. RSVP by emailing [email protected].

Anthony Munger is our resident social worker, and the mind behind our Immunity in the Community program, as well as helping get harm reduction supplies into as many hands as possible to keep Louisville safe.

Sydni Hampton is one of the Program Managers and will soon join Interim Director Ebony Cross on the new Podcast coming from the Louisville Pride Center, focusing on issues faced by LGBTQIA+ people every day, with experts to provide expertise. She also leads the weekly Movie Night, each Wednesday from 7-9.

The Louisville Pride Center will soon have a podcast studio to rent on the 3rd floor. Equipped with microphones, sound-dampening materials and more, the center hopes to give space to creatives to make their voices heard, while offering it at an accessible rate.

As we move into May, we continue to work toward getting the space that will house our long-awaited Community Food Pantry completed. This pantry will be stocked with shelf-stable foods as well as prepared sack lunches. If you are interested in donating to support the food pantry, please contact Sydni Hampton ([email protected])

The Louisville Pride Center

The Louisville Pride Center will be…

A safe and affirming gathering spot

The Center will be a hub for the LGBTQ+ community; an all-ages, accessible and inclusive gathering spot that is open to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. The Center will host a wide range of activities, such as game nights, film screenings, community dinners, book clubs, support groups, and classes.

A backbone for an empowered community

The Center will support people and organizations doing good work for the LGBTQ+ community to prevent burnout, promote collaboration, and ensure continuity. The Center will have multiple rooms for meetings and events, co-working and office space, networking opportunities, administrative and technical support, and professional development opportunities.

A trusted point of entry to critical services

The Center will partner with existing providers to build trust and reduce barriers to accessing critical services, such as mental health counseling, financial coaching, a food pantry, income tax assistance, benefits navigation, legal assistance, and wellness checkups.

The Center is scheduled to open for regular operation in June 0f 2022.

LGBTQ+ Community Center to open in 2022!

We are thrilled to announce that we have secured a location and are working to open an LGBTQ+ Community Center in early 2022! Just as exciting, our friends at Sweet Evening Breeze are also close to opening a resource center for homeless youth. This time next year,  LGBTQ+ Louisville will have two major new assets working together to help the community!

Information on volunteering and partnerships will be coming soon!
